SOUND: PAST & FUTURE is a project class that will explore some important precedents in 20th/21st century audio thinking, with an emphasis on revolutionary musical ideas that resonate far into the future. In the first half of the semester, we will study the work of some contrasting musical giants, such as Stockhausen and Boulez, Xenakis and Cage, and Maryanne Amacher and Anna Thorvaldsdottir, plus will examine in depth some key works from the Media Lab’s Opera of the Future group.
We will pivot in the second half of the class to creating individual sound-art works with edgy and visionary flair, resulting in a class-designed performance experience at the end of term in a magical location outside of MIT.
In addition, we will visit the Harvard Electroacoustic Music Studio for a “Stockhausen Experience,” will go to the Boston Symphony for a Thorvaldsdottir premiere, and will likely take a late-term trip to NYC for some sonic surprises.
